Singing songs has been an ancient custom. Originally the songs and carols sung during Christmas were hymns and prayers. Caroling refers to circle dance performed during a festival. With the passage of time it was included in the tradition of Christmas festivities. The Church considered these songs to be of pagan origin. So, they did not allow the songs to be included in the sacred services. However, with the advent of miracle and mystery plays Christmas songs and carols were sung inside the church.
