The Indian basketball team announced their arrival at the Asian Games 2006, Doha by doing something dramatic. No, they did not win hands down in their opening encounter. Instead, they decided to give their first match a skip!
The national basketball team of India did not turn up for their opener against Bahrain at the Basketball Indoor Hall, Sport City, on 23rd November. In this scenario, the match referee awarded the match to Bahrain 20-0.
It was quite a queer episode indeed. Before the start of the game, the Bahrain team were seen warming up at the stadium. Subsequently, as they took their positions on the court, their names were announced in the stadium.
The referee indicated the start of the game by blowing his whistle - and all this while the Indian team was not even in sight! Immediately, he declared the end of the match by blowing his whistle again.
Spectators, though few in number, were quite amused at the proceedings. When the referee shook hands with Bahraini players, it became clear that the match was forfeited.
The Bahrain team looked a little upset at their momentum being disturbed, as they seemed to be well-prepared for the contest. However, they took this 'win' as a bonus, and got back to training for their next game of basketball in Asian Games 2006 prelims.
