International chess master Oliver Dimakiling of Philippines has withdrawn his name from the list of contenders at the first-ever Asian Games chess tournament. He has instead opted to coach his team for the Games.
Dimakiling was one of the hot favorites for a prize at Doha Asian Games 2006. But, he has chosen to guide his country's young brigade against tougher opponents from other Asian regions like China and India.
The international chess community is quite surprised at Dimakiling's decision. He has been the most influential Filipino chess player in recent times - he won a silver medal at the Southeast Asian Games in Manila in 2005.
This withdrawal will certainly expose the vulnerability of the comparatively inexperienced Philippine squad, weakening their chances at the Asian Games 2006, Doha.
