After bagging three gold medals and creating a new world record at the Asian Games 2006, ace Indian shooter Jaspal Rana was more than happy being back home. However, he will now have to make a return trip to Doha, as he has been declared as the 'Best Sportsperson of the 15th Asian Games'.
Rana would fly back to Doha to personally receive this coveted honor, the first ever for an Indian sportsperson. He would be bestowed with the award during the glitzy closing ceremony of Asian Games 2006 on Saturday, 15th December.
Rana won the gold for shooting a world record 590 in Men's 25m Centre Fire Pistol event. In Doha, he also added two more gold medals and one silver medal for India in various categories of shooting at Asian Games 2006.
Considered as the enfant terrible of Indian shooting, Rana won his first shooting gold at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima.
Jaspal Rana has always been forthright in talking about the lack of infrastructure, finance and support from the Indian Shooting Association (ISA). After bagging his first gold at the Asiad 2006, his first comment was equally vociferous. He had absolutely refused to give any credit to the ISA, and said it was his perseverance and money that helped him in attaining this high.
Nonetheless, it is time for double celebrations at the Rana household. After all, their son has done the whole country proud by achieving a rare glory.
