Korean rider dies after fatal fall
Competing at Asian Games 2006 has resulted in the most fatal consequence for equestrian athlete Kim Hyung Chil from Korea. On Thursday, 7 December, Kim died after falling from his horse during the individual cross country competition, being held at Sports City Temporary Venue in Doha.
While attempting the eighth fence during his contest, the 47-year-old Kim was crushed under his horse Bundaberg Black. Although his mount has not borne any visible injuries, it is still under observation.
The oldest member of the Korean equestrian team, Kim was a resident of Seoul, and is survived by his wife and two children. In the last Asian Games in Busan, Kim had won the silver medal in the team competition.
After a gap of about three hours, the competition of equestrian at Asian Games 2006 resumed. Before the resumption, the race course and fences were thoroughly inspected by the technical authorities.
The Doha Asian Games Organizing Committee (DAGOC) medical committees said that doctors had rushed on the spot to help the athlete, who was pulse-less after falling while trying to clear the 1.5 meter high fence. Kim died en route to the hospital.
The DAGOC organized a press conference to mourn the death of the athlete, and also extended its condolences to the deceased's family. Representatives from the Olympic Council of Asia and the International Equestrian Association also expressed their deepest sympathies in this conference.
