At the Asian Games 2006 in Doha, Chess is being featured for the first time as a competitive sport. And, the first-ever chess gold medals have found their deserving 'necks' in the form of Humpy Koneru of India and Murtas Kazhgaleyev of Kazakhstan.
Koneru and Kazhgaleyev won the Women's and Men's Swiss Rapid Competitions respectively. The former defeated Dana Aketayeva, and the latter beat Sasikiran Krishnan to grab the top prizes of Chess at Asian Games 2006.
In the men's competitions, Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam took the silver and Bu Xiangzhi of China won the bronze medal at the Doha Asian Games. In the women's chess contests at Asian Games 2006, China's Zhao Xue and Qatar's Chen Zhu walked away with the silver and bronze medals respectively.
