The 'withdrawal spree' at Asian Games 2006, Doha continued as Palestine announced their withdrawal from the men's volleyball competition on Sunday, 26th November.
Palestine's withdrawal came a few hours before they were to meet China in their first preliminary match of volleyball in Asian Games 2006. The match was to be held at the Al-Rayyan Indoor Hall.
This was supposed to be Palestine's first appearance in the men's volleyball contest in Asian Games. However, in view of their withdrawal, China were declared as the winners, and were awarded victory by three sets to zero.
Palestine's next match was due against the UAE on Tuesday, 28th November. This match will be awarded to UAE by the same score line.
As a result of this withdrawal, Group D is left with only two contenders - China and UAE. The match between them will decide which team moves into the second round.
An official statement cited the warlike situation prevalent in Gaza strip, where the border has been closed, as the reason for Palestine's non-appearance. The whole Palestinian volleyball team is from Gaza, and hence, none of them could make it out of the city.
Due to unavoidable, and sometimes unknown reasons, the list of participants in various events at Asian Games 2006 is getting shorter by the day - a sad situation indeed.
