Asian Games 2006 is almost ready to roll in Doha, the splendid capital city of Qatar. Thousands of volunteers are working day in and day out to ensure that the event turns out to be the most spectacular show in the history of Asian Games.
Sportsmen from various participating countries in Asian Games 2006 will be the focus of attraction for this fortnight-long event. However, certain people and their toil go unnoticed and unappreciated.
One such 'community' is the laundry service - people who wash dirty linen, but not in public… rather, for the public! The linen and laundry service for Asian Games 2006, Doha is a highly organized and important operation.
Managed in the accommodation department of Doha Asian Games Organizing Committee's (DAGOC) head office, this operation is meticulously planned and executed on a daily basis.
Five trucks are used for delivery and collection of linen from all competition venues, the Asian Games 2006 Village and other training centers. It is reported that about 40,000 pieces of linen, totaling 20,000 kgs, are moved everyday.
After the process of laundry is over, this linen is packed in green and white striped bags and deposited in a warehouse, where they are further moved by a logistics team. Every bag is clearly marked and left at each apartment building in the Village. By 8 am, every piece of linen is placed in its proper place, and is ready for use.
Even though not many care to respect the work done by these people, it is something essential for the smooth functioning of a tournament of this magnitude. The 15th Asian Games would surely have been in a mess without these indispensable services.
