What was best known as warriors' defense tactic has achieved recognition in the form of Fencing, one of the 39 sports in Asian Games 2006.
A very traditional sport guided by powers of concentration and quick reflexes, Fencing is primarily all about sword fighting.
In nascent stages, competitions of Fencing had resulted in deaths of the fencers. Many of them were left badly injured or bloodied. However, keeping the safety of the fencers in mind, the competitive aspect of Fencing has introduced protective gears and blunted weapons.
Today, Fencing has gained recognition as one of the most skill-testing competitions in the world. At the Asian Games 2006, Fencing will comprise of events like Foil, Sabre and Epee. Men and women can compete in individual and team events.
Since the Tehran Asian Games in 1974, Fencing has been a regular feature of this quadrennial event.
