A player's mental physical prowess is put to test in a Judo competition at the Asian Games.
Introduced to Japan in 1882, Judo has become synonymous to defense. However, the real meaning of Judo is quite ironical. Combined from Ju - manning 'gentle' - and Do - meaning 'the way' - Judo resembles 'the gentle way'. Gentleness is however not really evident when players are held down to the ground by their opponents!
Contrary to popular belief, Judo is not about kicking or punching your opponent. It is all about gripping the opponent's uniform and trying to suppress him using balance and powerful movements. Judo players are not allowed the use of equipment or weapons either.
Simple though it may appear, Judo requires a lot of mental discipline and physically training. The Judo events at the Asian Games are based on various weight categories.
In the Tokyo Asian Games in 1958, Judo was first introduced as a demonstrative sport. Since 1986, at the Seoul Asian Games, it has been played as a competitive sport at the Games.
