The easiest but the most-competitive water sport in Asian Games 2006, Swimming has witnessed an effortless transformation from being a fitness-related pastime to a professionally recognized world sport.
Swimming events at the 15th Asian Games are basically races in a 50-meter pool. Swimmers use four kinds of strokes - breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle and butterfly.
The Swimming competition in the Doha Asian Games will have events featuring all these strokes. The freestyle swimmers can use any stroke during the competition.
Synchronized Swimming is another aquatic event at the Asian Games 2006. A distant relative of regular Swimming competitions, the synchronized version involves an amalgam of Swimming, gymnastics and ballet.
Individuals and teams of two or more swimmers can take part in synchronized swimming competitions. The sport is a test of endurance and control. Swimmers need to remain underwater for certain period and hence have to possess good control on their breathing mechanics.
These swimmers have to be flexible and artistic, as the competition entails a ballet-like performance as well. Synchronized Swimming at the Doha Asian Games is open only to female participants.
Swimming has been a part of the Asian Games schedule since the maiden edition in New Delhi in the year 1951.
