A traditional martial art form of Korea, Taekwondo is known to be one of the most systematic sports in Doha Asian Games.
Ironically, Taekwondo is not just about fighting or self-defense. It is also about commanding the mind and body through regular practice. The sport is considered to be a great way of enhancing life.
Literally meaning 'way of kicking or striking', Taekwondo is a game that teaches the players' to exercise control over his fists and feet. Also, the biggest lesson of Taekwondo is to facilitate peace and keep away from fighting as much as possible.
The Koreans have practiced this martial art for the last 5000 years. It is in fact regarded as a 'mind trainer' that helps change the outlook of a person's life.
However, on a professional level, Taekwondo is an eagerly-contested sport. There are events for men and women in various weight categories. Points are decided on the basis of three 2-minute rounds.
As per the history of Asian Games, Taekwondo was first competed for in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games.
