In Chinese, Wushu literally stands for 'Military Art'. The most famous martial art form in China, Wushu has crept into the country's culture. What started off as a self-defense technique, has over the years developed into a passionately followed professional sport.
Wushu performers can compete in two different events - Taolu and Sanshou. The sport comprises performance with bare hands, short apparatus (sword and broadsword) and long apparatus (spear and cudgel).
Wushu players have to perform movements like kicks, balances, punches, jumps, sweeps and stances according to the style.
The primary requirements of a Wushu player are technique and skill. Also, their movements and patters determine their points.
The last version of the Asian Games, at Busan in 2002, was the first time Wushu was introduced as a competitive event in the Games calendar.
