The history of Asian Games clearly indicates that the stars of previous Asian Games were mostly from China, Japan and Korea. Having dominated the Games' medal tally for a long time, these nations have remained virtually unchallenged in their endeavors.
In the last Asian Games held at Busan in South Korea, Chinese athletes held fort with their vigor and professionalism. In fact, a 16-year-old Chinese teenager, Zhang Nan was declared as the Best Gymnast of the 14th Asian Games.
With China winning a total of more than 300 medals in Busan, the stars of previous Asian Games are more than ready for the challenge this time around. The Korean, Chinese and Japanese delegations comprised of more than 900 members in 2002.
This number is expected to get bigger at the Doha Asian Games 2006. China have registered their name as the frontrunner, with Japan and Korea eyeing the third spot.
However, teams from India, Iran and Pakistan are also catching up. Sports like shooting, hockey and badminton have often seen unexpected results.
Quite a few previous Asian Games stars have been blemished with charges of doping that have left their nations disgusted. Nevertheless, there are many athletes who are honestly working towards winning the biggest prizes in Asian Games 2006.
Some names that held fort as stars of previous Asian Games are China's Wu Peng, Xu Yanwei, Tang Gonhong, Liu Guohui, Wang Yifu and Japan's Kosuke Kitajima. In teams sports however, Korea led the bandwagon.
It is yet to be seen as to who calls the shots in the various categories of sports in Asian Games 2006.
