Exploring the Purnululu National Park |
The chief attractions in Purnululu National Park are the Bungle Bungle Range, a majestic sight as you view it from the top. There is a facility of availing a flight over these wonders by helicopters, both in the park and from Halls Creek, Kununurra or Warmun. The Bungle Bungle Range is spread over a vast expanse of 45 000 hectares, standing tall at a height of 578 meters above the sea level with sandstone towers, cliffs and the banded beehive structures.

The Range, although used to be frequented by the Aboriginals because of the teeming flora and fauna in the rainy season, hadn't caught the fancy of most Europeans till about 1980s. The colors, alternating between orange and black, form horizontal stripes on these sandstone towers resulting in a very beautiful sight. The dark bands formed around the mound contrast with the lighter sandstone. The beehive-like mounds and structure are a commendable geological formation. If you want to stay at this place, there is Camping at Walardi or Kurrajong Camp with the facilities of toilets and water.
You can also take a walk down the Cathedral Gorge. The popular sites for hiking at Cathedral are Picaninny Creek and Gorge. The deeper you go in, the more treasures it unveils with many spectacular sceneries. A word of caution before you set out - be well prepared and inform a ranger. |

Visit the Echidna Chasm, to see some of the huge boulders, set down due to erosion of highland along the Osmond Range. The rivers flowing down the narrow steep slopes of the highlands resulted in the erosion, and deposition of boulders along the foot of the highlands.
Heritage
Purnululu has some of the old age marvels and traditions perfectly intact, like the hunter-gatherer tradition. It is a home to the unspoilt heritage of the Aboriginals, which dates back to some 22, 000 years. It also showcases some of the aboriginal art. The Aboriginals here have taken the onus to help in the day-to-day management of things, similar to the scheme of activities in Kakadu National Park.
