Hobart, the capital city of exhilarating Australian state Tasmania, is the oldest city of Australia, second only to Sydney. It is Sidney's partner in frolic during the much acclaimed and immensely popular Sidney-Hobart yacht race. A habor city, historical land, nature lover's haven and a bustling metropolitan, Hobart certainly has several flavors to it. Hobart was recently awarded the Conde Naste Traveler's 'Best Temperate Island' award.
Hobart is located in the South-eastern region of Tasmania on the estuary of River Derwent. It enjoys a nice maritime climate that's mildly temperate with four distinct seasons. Spring at Hobart is a captivating experience laden with apples and grape picking with the daffodils and wildflower blooming. It is in this season in which Hobart City organizes 'The Season of Entertainment and Romance' every two years. |
Exploring Hobart
Hobart was first settled in 1804 mainly by the convicts and the Whalers and colonial traders who frequented the waterfront. The footmarks of this past are still embedded in the historical landmarks of the city. A tour to the city and its historical sites unfurls the caustic stories of the colonizers' atrocities on the convicts. This is especially visible in the past era's criminal courts, penitentiary and execution yards. However, the colonial history certainly added to the charm of city with some enticingly ornate structures like St. David's Cathedral, Franklin Square which looks like a giant chess board, Theatre Royal that's the oldest operating theatre in Australia, the oldest brewery in Australia called Cascade Brewery and Anglesea Barracks that are the oldest in-use military establishment in Australia. The chocolate lovers can pamper their taste buds at the Cadbury Schweppes Chocolate Factory.

amazing exhibit of Australia's presence in Antarctica, displayed at the Antarctic Adventure. Cats and Fiddle Arcade is one Hobart landmark that adds colors to every Tour to Hobart. This sheltered area off the Elizabeth Street Mall has an animated clock, which acts out the Cat and the Fiddle nursery rhyme on the hour.
Mt. Wellington that stands 1271m high provides an entrancing bird's eye tour of Hobart city. Hobart is home to some of Australia's most exotic animals like the marsupials-kangaroos, kolas and the Tasmanian Devils, the monotreme- platypus and the Echidna. |
