2008 Olympic torch relay

 

2008 Olympic torch relay is scheduled to take place from March 25 to August 8, 2008. The torch relay will be held before the start of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad. Major arrangements are made for the torch relay. The 2008 Olympic torch relay is believed to be the longest distance of any Olympic torch relay, carrying the torch for about 137,000 kilometers.

The plans for holding the torch relay in 2008 were announced on April 26, 2007, in Beijing, China. After the announcement of the torch relay, plans were made to decide on a route through which the torch will be carried. The torch relay will lit up the Olympic flame in different cities.

Olympic torch relay is certified by International Olympic Committee (IOC). According to the tradition, the Olympic Flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece on March 25, 2008. From March 25 - 30, the Torch Relay will be carried across Greece, and will end at the Panathinaiko Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. From the Stadium, it will travel to Beijing, arriving on March 31. From Beijing, Chine, the torch will follow a route which passes through six continents.


The theme of the 2008 Olympic torch relay is “Journey of Harmony”, and will last for 130 days. The torch will be carried for 137,000 kilometers. It is the longest distance of any Olympic torch relay held so far. The following are the places through which the Olympic torch will be carried:

One of the best parts of this route will be the attempt to bring the Olympic Flame to the highest peak in the world Mt. Qomolangma. The arrival ceremony for bringing the flame into China will take place on March 31, 2008. During the ceremony, one of the lanterns with the Olympic Flame will be kept aside. The final bearer of the torch will then attempt to take the Flame to the highest peak in May.


The torch, which will pass through several cities and continents, is designed to remain lit in 65 kilometer-an-hour winds, and in rain that lasts up to 50 millimeters-an-hour. It is made according to the traditional Chinese concept of the 5 elements- Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth that make up the entire universe.

All plans are drawn and arrangements are made for successful 2008 Olympic torch relay. The torch will travel through different cities, symbolizing cordial links between China and the rest of the world. The prominent factor of the 2008 Olympic torch relay will be the attempt to carry the flame to the top of Mount Everest.
