Olympic Records

 

Olympic records refer to the best performances in the history of a particular event. These records are important milestones in the careers of the contestants. Familiarizing yourself with the Olympic Records would help you to understand the games better.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes certain events with Olympic records. These are: Archery, Cycling, Shooting, Weightlifting, Speed skating, Track & field and Swimming

Archery debuted in the 1900 Olympics games. Since then it has been there in 13 Olympiads. There have been 83 nations who have taken part in the competitions. It was in Paris that archery appeared for the first time. There were 7 disciplines in the game. From 1920 to 1972 archery did not feature in the Olympic Games. From 1972 modern archery competition started. Standardized forms were used and many countries took part in the games. From the 1992 summer Olympics the head-to-head matches were started. This method has been in use ever since.

Cycling has featured in the Olympics since the inception of the modern Olympic Games in the 1896 summer Olympics. The events that are held are:

3. Road cycling, Women
4. Track cycling, Women
5. BMX, Women
6. BMX, Men
7. Mountain Bike, Women
8. Mountain Bike, Men

Going through the Olympic records, you will come to know that shooting has been a part of the games since the origins of the modern Olympics in the 1896 summer Olympics. It however did not feature in the 1904 and the 1928 editions. Initially the Olympiads featured many shooting events which however did not have any standardization. When the sport was introduced once again in 1932, there were two events. The number of events kept on increasing until it reached 17 in 2000-2004. There would however be 15 games in the 2008 games.

Speed skating refers to a sport event wherein contestants are timed while crossing a given distance. Figure skating had started in 1908 Olympics figure skating had been started. in 1916 long track speed skating was introduced.

Swimming is another sport that is an important part of modern summer Olympics. The sport has been thrown open to women candidates as well since 1912. It is one of the popular spectator sports. The sport also has the largest number of events in the games.


Atheletics comprises throwing, jumping and running events. Some of the track events are: middle distance, sprints, steeplechase, long distance, relays, hurdling, and race walking. Some of the field events are: hammer throw, javelin throw, discus throw, shot put, high jump, pole vault, long jump and many more.

Weightlifting has been a major event in the summer Olympic Games. It has featured in every game since 1896. Women’s weightlifting debuted in the 2000 games. These Olympic records would give you a better idea of the Olympics.
