Kiribati also called The Republic of Kiribati is one of the famous islands of Micronesia. The Republic of Kiribati is situated in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. This island covers almost 5 million sq kilometers area near the equator.
Kiribati, formerly known as the Gilbert Islands, was predominantly dwelt by Micronesian ethnic group that spoke same oceanic language for long years until they came into contact with Europeans. It was on July 12, 1979 Kiribati was declared an independent country by Britain.
The Republic of Kiribati as is famously known was divided into various districts before independence. Those original districts were:
- Banaba
- Central Gilberts
- Line Islands
- Northern Gilberts
- Southern Gilberts
- Tarawa
However after independence, the three groups of Islands characterized Kiribati. These island groups do not have any administrative functions. These groups are:
- Gilbert Group (Kiribati),
- Line Islands, ( The Northern Equatorial Islands ) and
- Phoenix Group
