Christmas Traditions are numerous as there are many countries and nationalities around the world. Christmas word is derived from 'Cristes maesse', or 'Christ's Mass'. But the spirit of celebrating Christmas is same. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is believed that the first Christmas celebration held in Rome in 336 AD. As the tradition prevails, Santa Claus, Father Christmas, a white bearded man in red clothes distributes sweets and toys to children. It is also believed that he lives near the North Pole and arrives riding a sledge pulled by reindeer. He comes inside the houses via chimney at puts toys and other gifts inside stockings or bags hung at the bedpost or at the windows.
Christmas is a festival celebrated in the month of winter. In many poems the poets have associated winter with death. Here are a few lines quoted from a famous poem RING OUT THE OLD, RING IN THE NEW by Lord Tennyson:
"Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow;
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die."
According to the tradition, the festival of Christmas is celebrated to welcome the coming year and shedding off that is evil.
