Europe is a collection of peninsulas when seen both geographically and geologically. Europe is the world's second smallest continent as per its area. Europe forms the western part of Eurasia. Europe is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean in the north, by the Atlantic Ocean in the west, by the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea in the south, and to the Caspian Sea and the Ural Mountains in the east.
The name 'Europe' is by and large derived from the Greek words 'eurys' and 'ops', which mean 'broad' and 'face', respectively. In the Middle East, Europe is popularly known as a perspective, "the sun sets over Europe: the lands to the west".

Europe encompasses an area of about 10, 600, 000 sq. km., being a little larger than Australia. Population wise, it is the third largest continent after the continents of Asia and Africa. The population of Europe is about 11per cent of the total world's population.
Europe is divided into several regions, such as, Western Europe, Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Northern Europe, Southern Europe and Asia. Western Europe includes Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, France, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland. The physical definition of Central Europe usually comprise of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and the Alpine countries of Austria, Germany Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.

Eastern Europe can be defined in a strict or broad sense. It includes Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. Northern Europe encompasses only the Nordic Countries, which are Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark and also the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Southern Europe has in its territory, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra, Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, Monaco and Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro. It also includes the Mediterranean states of Cyprus, Malta and Eastern.
