The spanking new Cologne stadium is a perfect gift to the
football crazy people of Cologne. The stadium was formally
opened in 2004. Cologne is Germany's fourth-largest city and
unfortunately it missed out on the 1974 FIFA World Cup. The
new ultra modern stadium with 46, 000 capacity had to overcome
stiff competition from other German cities. Cologne will be
hosting four preliminary round matches as well as a match
in the round of sixteen.
The new stadium has been constructed at the site of the old
Müngersdorfer stadium. The earlier stadium had a running
track, but the new arena is more compact. The upper tiers
feature a 34 degree rake and the playing surface is separated
from the stands by less than eight meters. This stadium is
the home ground of FC Cologne and the club museum too is located
in the stadium premises. Some of Germany's great football
players like Wolfgang Overath, Toni Schumacher, Pierre Littbarski
and Thomas Häßler all enjoyed remarkable success
at this ground.
Apart from hosting football matches, the stadium has also
been a venue for Rolling Stones concerts. The Pope of Vatican
city had also addressed the people of Cologne at this stadium.
