England would be making its 12th World Cup appearance in the 18th FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany. England has been placed in Group B, along with Sweden, Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago. England will start its World Cup campaign against Paraguay on 10 June 2006 in Frankfurt, Germany.
England beats Paraguay (1-0)
England started its FIFA World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Paraguay in the hard-fought Group B opening contest in Frankfurt on June 11, 2006. Both teams played with their full potential and had their share of chances and misses. Thanks to an early goal from striker Carlos Gamarra in just 3' of start of the game that provided an early lead to England. Paraguay fought really well to bring an equalizer in the second-half and gave England a tough time to hold their lead. Frank Lampard of England was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his extraordinary all-round performance.
England qualifies for Round of 16
England defeated Trinidad and Tobago (2-0) in their second Group B contest in Nuremberg on 15 June 2006, and qualified for the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup Germany. Trinidad and Tobago displayed a remarkable performance but failed to hold English striker in the last 10 minutes of the game. Peter Crouch struck the first goal for England in (83'), while Steven Gerrard scored second goal in injury time in (91+'). David Beckham was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his extraordinary all-round performance.
