Switzerland overcomes Togo (2-0)
Switzerland overcame defiant Togo 2-0 in an interesting Group G contest in Dortmund 19 June 2006. Alexander Frei scored the first goal in 16-th minute of the game, while second goal by Tranquillo Barnetta in the 88th minute completely removed the threat of equalizer by Togo. Alexander Frei was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his superb goal and good all-round performance.
Korea Republic holds France (1-1)
Korea Republic held favorite France to a 1-1 draw in an enthralling Group G contest in Leipzig on 18 June 2006. France took an early lead when its star striker Thierry Henry scored their first World Cup goal since the 1998 Final in the 9-th minute. When French were looking a sure winner, Korea Republic fought back with a superb goal from Park Ji-Sung in 81-st minute. Park Ji-Sung was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his equalizer and good all-round performance. |
Switzerland draws with France (0-0)
In a very exciting Group G match in Stuttgart today, Switzerland contested well to deny a victory to favorite France. Both teams had their chances and misses in the game that finally ended in a goalless draw. Switzerland had the closest chance and miss when a free kick from Tranquillo Barnetta hit the inside of the post, and Alexander Frei totally missed convert the rebound. France also had its share of misfortune when Frank Ribery had a great chance to shoot but instead passed the ball to star striker Thierry Henry, who failed convert it to a goal. Claude Makelelel of France was declared the Man-of-the-Match.
South Korea defeats Togo (2-1)
In yet another tightly contested Group G game, South Korea defeated Togo that surprised every one with its newfound enthusiasm and energy. Togo's Mohamed Kader was first to score at 31' and Togo appeared as a favorite winner till 54th minute, when the skipper Jean-Paul Abolo earned a second yellow and had to march-off. As the ten-man Togo defense weakened, Korea seized the advantage and Lee Chun Soo equalized the score at 54'. Ahn Jung Hwan scored the winning goal for Korea at 72' and was declared the Man-of-the-Match.
