The Germans associate the city of Hanover for providing them
with five monarchs which also includes Mad King George. Hanover
is the proud capital of Lower Saxony and received worldwide
attention by hosting the prestigious World Expo in 2000. Unfortunately
the exhibition was not as successful as it was meant to be,
attracting just about half of the projected numbers which
in itself is somewhat paradoxical considering the fact that
the city has no trouble bringing in big numbers business visitors
rather than tourists to its countless trade shows.
The city of Hanover has flourished as a key commercial hub
since the medieval times and during the early part of the
19th century the industrial revolution had made significant
inroads into the city's economy. |

During World War II, Hanover
being a key industrial town was the target heavy allied bombings
and a greater part of the Old Town was devastated and had
to be entirely rebuilt.
Exploring the city's major attractions is relatively simple
if one goes on the trail of Roter Faden which leads one to
the station all the way through to the old town. In the centre
stands the, a The magnificent 14th century church Marktkirche
stands majestically with its dazzling stained-glass windows.
You would do well to visit places like Knochenhauerstasse,
Kramerstrasse and Burgstrasse where numerous other medieval
edifices can be found.
Don't miss out on the dome shaped New Town Hall which is conspicuous
by its curved lift which literally takes you in the region
of the dome's outer surface to a platform which provides breathtaking
views of Maschsee Lake and the Sprengel Museum which is renowned
for its fine collection of 20th century artwork. You can also
browse through the works of eminent artists of the stature
of Botticelli and Rubens at the Lower Saxony Museum.
