Italy would be making its 16-th World Cup appearance in the 18th FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany. Italy has been placed in Group E, along with Czech Republic, Ghana and USA. Italy will start its World Cup campaign against Ghana on 12 June 2006 in Hanover, Germany.

Italy started its World Cup 2006 campaign in a dream way by defeating debutant Ghana 2-0 in an exciting Group E contest in Hanover on June 12, 2006. Ghana displayed an extraordinary performance and hold Italy goalless till 40th minute when Andrea Pirlo produced a superb goal to give his team 1-0 lead. Ghana also had its share of chances and a second-half equalizer always looked possible until Vincenzo Iaquinta scored the second goal for Italy in 83' and finished them off. Andrea Pirlo was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his spectacular goal and good all-round performance.
