Kaiserslautern's historic Fritz-Walter-Stadion was built
way back in 1920. It is positioned on the Betzenberg, a 40
metre sandstone hummock right in the center of Frankfurt.
The stadium is named after Germany's 1954 FIFA World Cup-winning
captain.
Over the years Fritz-Walter-Stadion has embraced modern architectural
features in order to be in tune with changing times. The stadium
is the home turf FC Kaiserslautern who their home matches
here. Construction work on the stadium was complete for the
FIFA World Cup by November 2005. As part of the construction,
the stands to the West and South were considerably extended
in order to increase the seating capacity. A state-of-the-art
media enclosure and an exclusive VIP stand has also been incorporated
in the northern part of the ground.
FC Kaiserslautern popularly referred to as the 'Red Devils'
is German football's richest and most colorful histories.
The have won the prestigious Bundesliga on four occasions.
As far as financing of this mega project was concerned, the
state of Rhineland-Palatinate contributed €21.7m , €7.7m
from the city of Kaiserslautern and another sum of €18.9m
from FC Kaiserslautern.
