Leipzig has played an important role in Europe's commercial
and intellectual life for a long time. Leipzig's shopping
malls have been attractively restored. Apart from shopping

Leipzig's renowned Renaissance Old Town Hall was the place
where Johann Sebastian Bach started his career as cantor of

The Old Town Hall is among the best architectural specimen
of the German Renaissance and today houses the Museum of City
History. The Museum's banquet hall regularly hosts prestigious
concerts. Visitors are enthralled by the council chamber,
the 1823 model of the city, the prison cells and the portrait
of Bach. The Old Town Hall building was built in a record
time of only nine months in 1556.
St. Thomas Church is an impressive Gothic church and is renowned
for its Choir. It is also the place where the great Johann
Sebastian Bach is buried. The magnifiecnt St. Nicholas Church
along with St. Thomas Church is where J.S. Bach did a great
deal of work. It has a carefully preserved organ and many
of Bach's notable compositions were performed here.
The Battle of Leipzig monument is Germany's largest monument.
This collosal monument was built to commemorate the Battle
of Leipzig between the allied troops and Napoleon's army in
the year 1813. Today it stands as a monument to European peace
and harmony. Guided tours, concerts and exhibitions are regularly
held in the hall of honour showcasing the Battle of Leipzig
monument.
Mendelssohn House is devoted to the memory of Felix Mendelssohn
who was kapellmeister of the Gewandhaus. It is here that the
great composer lived and died and the house is maintained
in the same manner so as to resemble the days of his existence.
Felix Mendelssohn is regarded as a visionary reformer of Leipzig's
musical life. His influence on European music was particularly
strong during the first half of the 19th century.
The Grassi Museum complex is a virtual treasure trove which
showcases 5, 000 exhibits belonging to five centuries. Within
the Grassi Museum complex there are two other museums here
- the Museum of Arts and Crafts and the Museum of Ethnology
both renowned for their rich collections.

There is the Museum of Fine Arts which is renowned for its
Cranach collection as well as collections of old German and
old Dutch artists.. In all the museum has 2, 700 paintings,
750 sculptures and over 55, 000 prints.
Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig hosts a staggering 600
events every year .The trademark Große Concerte series
are the principal attraction although there are concerts by
the Gewandhaus Choir and by many smaller music ensembles.
Leipzig Opera House is one of the most renowned opera house
has a history that dates back to 1693. The Leipzig Opera House
is home to one of Europe's top ballet ensembles. |

also an opera chorus and an exclusive ballet school. Leipzig
