Munich was built way back in 1158 at the behest of Henry
the Lion. The town rights were bestowed to the city of Munich
in 1214. Gustav Adolf of Sweden had captured the city during
the war and in 1806 Munich was officially declared as the
capital of Bavaria.
Munich is resplendent with classical buildings like the Glyptothek,
Old and New Pinakothek, the magnificent Royal Palace, Feldherrnhalle
and Siegestor all of which were built during the reign of
King Ludwig I. In 1918, Kurt Eisner declared himself as the
Prime Minister of Bavaria.
Munich has bore the brunt of the Nazi attack in 1933 as well
as the allied air raids, which caused extensive destruction
of Munich. However the spirit of the city was such that it
rose from the ashes of the World War like a phoenix and today
Munich is regarded as a key commercial metropolis of Germany
and Europe.
