    France overcomes Spain (3-1)
    After some initial setbacks France fought back well to defeat Spain in their Round of 16 clash in Hanover on 27 June 2006. Spain took a 1-0 lead in the 28-th minute but French striker Frank Ribery produced a superb equalizer in the 41-st minute of the game. France took a 2-1 lead in the 83-rd minute, followed by a spectacular goal from the french captain Zinedine Zidane in the injury time. France will now play Brazil in the quarter-finals on July 1, 2006 in Frankfurt. Patrick Vieira was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his excellent all-round performance.

    The World Champions Brazil defeated the inevitable Ghana 3-0 in their Round of 16 clash in Dortmund on 27 June 2006. Brazil took an early lead from a fine goal from veteran striker Ronaldo in the 5-th minute.
