The Ellinikon International Airport is located close to the residential areas of Greece. This is the reason the international flights to the Ellinikon were discontinued in favor of the newer Eleftherios Airport. Though the Ellinikon International Airport does not serve passenger flights anymore, its runway is still used for landing and takeoffs by freight planes.
The Ellinikon International Airport started operations in 1938. The East terminal of the airport was designed by Eero Saarinen. The airport runway measured 1, 800 meters. By 1997, the airport was handling 12, 000, 000 passengers.
IN 1958, the runway was expanded to 3, 500 meters to accommodate growing air traffic. The famous East Terminal handled international flights while the West Terminal was dedicated to the domestic flights by the national carrier, Olympic Airways.
