The ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 will be the last World Cup for many of the world’s best batsman. Cricket fans and aficionados were expecting fireworks when the tournament took off in the West Indies on March 13. The number of centuries in Cricket World Cup 2007 was touted to outnumber all previous tournaments, but the Indian and the Pakistani teams made an early exit.
The history of Cricket World Cup has witnessed magnificent centuries from the many leading batsmen. Indian’s Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, and Australian Ricky Ponting and Mark Waugh lead the bandwagon with four centuries each in Cricket World Cups.
Sachin Tendulkar of India has so far been the most exemplary batsman in this quadrennial event. Most of the batting records in Cricket World Cup are in his name. However, due to early exit from the tournament, there was no addition to centuries but he remains the highest run-getter in the World Cup.
Australian skipper Ricky Ponting, opener Matthew Hayden and wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist were the perspective century-makers from the Australian stable and Ricky Ponting became one of the leading century scorers as expected.
Mathew Hayden hit three centuries and scored 659 runs in 11 matches that he played in the 2007 World Cup.
KP Pietersen of England also hit two centuries with highest score of 104 in nine matches that he played in the cup.
