Fielding records in Cricket World Cup are not accorded as much importance as batting or bowling. This is even though fielding is the most important part of international cricket.
Teams that are superb in the field have often won matches by virtue of their agility and accuracy. And, on the contrary, despite putting up good batting performances, many teams have lost matches due to their lackadaisical approach on the field.
The records of fielding have been quite varied in the Cricket World Cups. Different teams have held fort in different situations. However, Australia are clear front-runners for the top spot, as far as fielding records in World Cups are concerned.
The record for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper (52) is in the name of Australian Adam Gilchrist. He is followed by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, who has 32 World Cup dismissals in his name.
Ricky Ponting, captain of Australian World Cup squad, holds the Cricket World Cup record for most catches (25) by a fielder. He is followed by Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (18).
Taking into account one particular World Cup, the name of Adam Gilchrist again emerges on top in the list of most dismissals by a wicketkeeper.
