Teamwork is the biggest requisite for success in cricket. Even though there have been instances of one or two players taking their teams to victory; the game by and large depends on team performances. The highest team scores in Cricket World Cups have happened when a cricket side has put in its best, with each player working in tandem with the other.
The best team is undoubtedly the one that knows how to hold fort in tough situations, and, also how to make up for one another’s failures.
As per the history of Cricket World Cup, the highest team total is in the name of India. They made 413-5 in 50 overs in 2007 version of the cup. Virender Sehwag’s 114 runs off 87 balls helped India put up this mammoth total. It was his first world cup century. He took 81 balls to reach 100-mark.
India won by a huge margin of 257 runs and broke the earlier record of 256-run victory of Australia against Namibia in 2003 World Cup. The match between Sri Lanka and Bermuda also witnessed Lanka’s 243-run win in the ninth version of the cup.
Five batsmen of the Bermuda team went back to pavilion without opening their accounts, which equaled the record for most ducks in a World Cup innings. Other three instances were; England v West Indies at Lord’s in 1975, Canada v Sri Lanka at Paarl in 2003 and Sri Lanka v India at Johannesburg in 2003.
The previous highest was when Sri Lanka made 398-5 in 50 overs in their match against Kenya at Kandy, during their highly successful campaign of the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Aravinda de Silva played a mammoth innings of 145 runs in 115 balls to take the Lankans to victory.
In a 1999 World Cup match against Sri Lanka at Taunton, India made 373-6 and eventually won by 157 runs. Sourav Ganguly (183) and Rahul Dravid (145) were the star performers, scoring 318 runs for the second wicket, and creating the world record for best partnership in Cricket World Cup.
