In the history of Cricket World Cup, there have been only three tied matches in the nine editions of this tournament. In World Cup 2007, there was a tie between Zimbabwe and Ireland. Winning the toss, team Zimbabwe asked Ireland to bat first.
Batsmen of Ireland posted a score of 221-9 in the stipulated quota of 50 overs. Chasing the target of 222 runs, Zimbabwe managed to reach a score of 221-10 runs in 50 overs. Both the teams were given one point each.
The first such instant took place during the 1999 Cricket World Cup in England. It was the semifinal game between Australia and South Africa at Birmingham.
Australia had scored 213 runs in 49.2 overs. In reply, South Africa had made 213-9 and still had two more balls to score the last run. As the fateful ball was bowled, an inexplicable mix-up between the batsmen (Lance Klusener and Allan Donald) ended with Donald being run-out. South Africa were left stranded on 213, resulting in the first tied match in Cricket World Cups.
As per the past rules of ICC, in case of a tied match, an earlier result was to be taken into account. Thus, Australia went on to play and win the final at the cost of South Africa.
The second tied match in Cricket World Cup took place between South Africa (again!) and Sri Lanka. During this 2003 Cricket World Cup match at Durban, hosts South Africa were set a target of 268 by the Lankans.
In this rain-interrupted match, a calculation error on part of then captain Shaun Pollock led the match being slipped from the hands of Proteas, resulting in the second tied match of Cricket World Cups.
