Led by the talented Prosper Utseya, Zimbabwe are fancying their chances of doing well at the World Cup 2007, or at least of outshining other minnows like Kenya, Bangladesh, Canada, Scotland, etc. The key players in Zimbabwean team are the ones who have had their share of ups and downs in international cricket.
Zimbabwe cricket has witnessed periods of tumult and agitations, wherein white cricketers had rebelled against the local cricket administration, accusing it of racial practices. It was during this period that most of the key players of the present Zimbabwean team were thrust into the national squad.
Prosper Utseya was one of the many young boys who suddenly found themselves exposed to international cricket, following the withdrawal of rebel players. However, he did not disappoint the selectors; in fact, he went on to cement his berth in the side by virtue of commendable performances.
Utseya has made a good impact as an off-spinner – he is touted as a promising player for the future. He will definitely be one of the key players for Zimbabwe in the 2007 World Cup.
After debuting in November 2002, Stuart Matsikenyeri has not really been able to maintain the standards expected of him. Nonetheless, he is a key player in the Zimbabwe team for World Cup 2007. His batsmanship has made the world sit up and take notice of his repertoire of strokes and perseverance. He’ll be keen to enter a higher league of cricketers with the help of his performances in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 in West Indies.
