Host of the last World Cup in 2003, South Africa can be easily termed as the unluckiest cricketing team. Despite being consistent in their performances, they have never been able to lay hands on eternal glory in the form of the World Champions’ tag. South Africa’s World Cup squad is looking forward to making the ninth edition of this quadrennial event lucky for themselves.
South Africa have in their stable some of the best cricketers of the world. Their 15-man squad for the World Cup 2007 is fairly balanced and has recently tasted success in the form of a 3-1 series win against Pakistan.
Batsman Graeme Smith has been placed at the helm of South Africa’s World Cup team. Over the years, Smith has graduated from being a docile cricketer to an aggressive leader. He will be assisted in this campaign by some of the world’s best players. Wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, a senior player in the side, is known for his pinch hitting and tidy ‘keeping.
Openers Herschelle Gibbs and AB de Villiers make a deadly combo, capable of ravaging good bowling attacks. Gibbs has loads of experience and thousands of runs in his kitty and thus will be one of the key players in South African team.
The South African World Cup squad includes the name of Jacques Kallis, invariably the world’s best all-rounder at present. His expertise at all departments of the game has made him almost invincible.
Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini, Andre Nel and Charl Langeveldt are part of the star-studded bowling lineup of South Africa’s World Cup team. Pollock, the most experienced of them all, is a world-class player who skippered the national team at one point of time.
South Africa have been placed in Group A for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 in West Indies. They will be competing against Australia, Netherlands and Scotland in the Group Stage of matches. .
