Over the years, Zimbabwe have been relegated to the position of minnows in international cricket. Broken apart by political and racial issues, the team has lost its sheen and desire to excel. However, the Zimbabwean World Cup squad is expected to change things. All hopes are now pinned on this exuberant bunch of cricketers who are passionate about the game and their country.
Zimbabwe’s World Cup squad is headed by Prosper Utseya. A respected off-spinner, Utseya is regarded as a veteran of the ‘revived’ Zimbabwean team. He was just thrust into the national team in the wake of rebellions started by white players. With time, he has gained experience and has become a key player of Zimbabwean team.
Batsman Friday Kasteni was the only surprise inclusion in this team. He has come in at the expense of Hamilton Masakadza, who has not been in the best of forms.
Wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor has done nothing worthwhile in recent past. Nonetheless, selectors of the Zimbabwe World Cup team have reposed their faith in him by deciding to take him to the West Indies.
After recuperating from a knee injury, pace bowler Tawanda Mupariwa has been included in the Zimbabwean World Cup squad. His form will be crucial for Zimbabwe’s chances in this quadrennial tournament. Blessing Mahwire, another experienced head, had to be left out of the World Cup squad of Zimbabwe after falling ill with pneumonia.
