Collingwood leads England towards a comfortable win
England emerged victorious against Ireland after they defeated latter by 48 runs in an all interesting ICC World cup Super Eights match. England gave a brilliant all-round performance and gained their desired result by obtaining two extra points. Both England and Ireland were without carry over points, therefore this match was termed by many as a crucial match for both the teams.
In this Super Eights ICC World cup encounter at Guyana on Guyane National Stadium, England set a target of 267 runs for victory in return of which the Ireland team was all out in 48.1 overs after scoring just 218 runs. Both Collingwood and Flintoff played a crucial role in taking their team towards an easy win.
After scoring a fast half-century in just 65 deliveries the ace batsman Paul Collingwood went on to score 90 runs of just 82 balls. His crucial innings came to end after he was run out by Andrew White. The new world number one batsman Kevin Pietersen hit five boundaries during his vital 48 run innings.
Star batsman Andrew Flintoff also contributed 43 runs with the bat later he also took four crucial wickets for his team. The all round performance by Flintoff sharpened the English attack who managed to bowl out their opponents in just 48.1 overs.
First time ICC World cup players Ireland was unable sustain the English attack. Though 267 was an achievable target Irish team found the going tough against England after they lost their openers Jeremy Bray and Eoin Morgan early in the innings.
Niall O'Brien was the lone fighter for Ireland he along with William Porterfield contributed 61 for the third wicket stand. He also put up 44 runs for the fourth wicket partnership. Just as it seemed that Ireland would snatch the match from the hands of England Niall O'Brien was stumped by P Nixon, Brien was out at 63. After Ireland skipper Trent Johnston was bowled at 27 and Andrew White was caught behind by P Nixon at 38 the Irish team crumbled at 218 runs.
