Hometown Heroes register an easy win
In the all interesting match between West Indies and Ireland the hosts registered an easy win by eight wickets over Ireland. The result of this ICC Cricket World Cup rain-affected match was decided by Duckworth-Lewis method.
After winning the toss the Ireland team choose to bat first but their decision proved wrong as they were restricted only to 183 runs in 48 overs. Which meant West Indies were required to score an increased total of 190 runs as revised by Duckworth-Lewis Method.
West Indies got early success after opening batsman William Porterfield was out for a duck. Ireland never recovered from early loss as Eoin Morgan, who put a 58 run second wicket partnership, was caught at fine leg at just 18 runs after Denesh Ramdin held an outstanding running catch.
Ireland's progress was slowed when they lost two wickets in space of nine balls which saw visitors faltering at 82 for four. Opener Jeremy Bray was the top score who hit 41 from 72 balls followed by Andre Botha who gathered 28. The collective effort of Chris Gayle, Daren Powell, and Dwayne Bravo restricted visitors to just 183 runs.
At the start of West Indian innings the hosts saw loss of early wickets. Chris Gayle was caught at deep mid off in the fifth over, he scored 18 runs. But
Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s unbeaten stand of 102 from 113 balls saw West Indies cruising through the match.
The hosts lost their second wicket which was of Vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan who scored 36 runs, his runs gave support to the massive 119 partnership-stand for second wicket with Chanderpaul.
Chanderpaul’s sixth one-day International hundred helped West Indies to collect a superb eight-wicket victory at Sabina Park. West Indies gained a comfortable victory with 59 balls to spare. Sensible batting by Samuels ensured that hosts lost no more wickets and achieved the target comfortably.
Though both West Indies and Ireland have already qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup Super Eight matches, but the result has allowed the West Indian team two-point bonus for the next stage of the tournament.
