New Year in Kuala Lumpur is full of fun and frolic. Kuala Lumpur is a Muslim city, but New Year celebrations in Kuala Lumpur show hardly any difference from other countries in the world. The celebration starts on the New Year’s Eve with ancestor worship and family re-union dinner. This is considered as the opening ceremony to the celebration while the closing ceremony is held on the 15th day called Chap Goh Meh.

Before New Year in Kuala Lumpur, the local residents decorate their house with red lanterns, banners, plastic or paper firecrackers, panels inscribed with calligraphic characters bearing themes of happiness, wealth and longevity.


During this time of the year families re-unite with each other and enjoy scrumptious meal together. Mandarin oranges, dried Peking ducks and sausages, which are specialty of the region, are consumed in large numbers. The consumption of wines, beers and soft drinks also increase during New Year celebration in Kuala Lumpur.


Rituals practiced at the time of New Year in Kuala Lumpur:


Boiled rice and cooked dishes, fruits; tea and wine in small cups are arranged in straight rows on the altar as offerings to the departed souls. Medium size, burning candles and lighted joss sticks are arranged on both sides of the altars by womenfolk. Family members, starting from the father, take turn to light up three joss sticks each, pray and invite the deities and ancestors to start the meal. The lighted joss sticks are stuck in a tin can filled with rice. When the candles and joss sticks are burnt to more than half their original length, “gold” and “silver” papers are burnt outside the house as offerings. When finally all candles and joss sticks are almost burnt out and extinguished, tea and wine in small cups are poured over the ashes of the burnt paper outside the house and this how the ceremony comes to an end.
