New Year Baby or the Baby New Year, as many call it, is an age-old tradition that began in Greece around 6000 B.C. Greeks used a baby as a symbol of rebirth on the occasion of New Year. Legends say that this custom was followed to celebrate the annual rebirth of their God of Wine, Dionysus.
The early Egyptians also practiced this popular custom. The Christians denounced this custom initially and later only the church members were allowed to practice it. Germans later introduced the use of baby image as a banner for the New Year Celebrations. Baby New Year is an image represented by a baby wearing nothing else except a diaper. At the beginning he is just a baby but grows up by the end of the year and hands over his duties to Baby New Year.
On the other hand, people born on the New Year's Day are also known as New Year Babies. The craze to get the New Year Baby is so much that many hospitals give away prizes to the first baby born in the New Year. We, at Travour will be the first ones to tell you the names of New Year Babies as soon as we enter 2007.
