Korean New Year

Korean New Year, also known, as “Solnal ”, is celebrated on the first day of the Lunar New Year. With confusion on the day to celebrate the Korean New Year many Korean communities celebrate the Korean New Year twice. Some celebrate it on the first day of the Lunar Year as mentioned before, and some celebrate it on January 1 st along with the majority of the people all over the world.

Korean New Year is a time to follow various customs and rituals in Korea. Koreans believe that if someone sleeps on the New Year's Eve in Korea called “ Sut dal kum mum ”, that person will have white eyebrows. Perhaps this is the reason that nobody is allowed to sleep on the New Year's Eve in Korea, this custom is popularly known as “ Je Yah ”. Moreover people believe that instead of sleeping one should welcome the New Year with awaken eyes and brightness.

Cleansing the houses thoroughly, brushing off the old and bringing in the new is what the Koreans too believe in on the occasion of Korean New Year. Then there is the ritual to burn bamboo sticks in order to cast off every single house demon. Koreans have a belief that the sound of exploding bamboo's knots would scare the demon, thereby making him run away. All this is followed with an offering called “ Sadang ” at home to family elders. There is a particular way of placing the offerings of Sadang at the altar during Korean New Year Celebrations.

An aura of jollity and festivity can be seen everywhere in Korea on the occasion of Korean New Year. People meet and greet their friends and families, they exchange gifts and greeting cards. Children are seen overjoyed receiving the lucky money, fruits and candies. All are seen dressed up in new clothes symbolizing a fresh beginning in terms of Korean New Year. Yut Nori, a stick game and Seesawing are some games in which the children indulge on Solnal.
