Vietnamese New Year

Vietnamese New Year, also known as “Tet” is the first morning of the first day of the New Year. Formerly known as, Nguyen-dan, Vietnamese New Year is one of the much awaited festival in Vietnam with the celebrations lasting as long as for a week. Preparations for Vietnamese New Year begins month ago with people in full spirit to welcome the New Year. What makes the Vietnamese New Year special is the fast that it falls between the harvesting of the crops and the sowing of the new crops.

Homes are cleansed thoroughly to get rid of the evil and old and to bring in the new for the coming year. People are seen out in the market buying new stuffs from clothes to household furnishings. All pending debts and payments are resolved before ringing in the Vietnamese New Year. Copper and silverware are polished on the occasion of Vietnamese New Year.

The famous ritual of firework display, known as “ Le Tru Tich ” is held at the midnight hour on the New Year's Eve. Vietnamese too like the Chinese believe that the New Year's Day is what determines one's luck for the rest of the New Year. Perhaps this is the reason that the Vietnamese ensure that everything on the New Year's Day symbolizes good fortune. Homes are adorned with beautiful Hoa Mai , a yellow blossom representing spring. Then there is a custom of planting the New Year's tree called Cay Neu in front of their homes.

Meeting and greeting friends and families along with exchanging gifts are also part of the Vietnamese New Year Celebrations. One week prior to the Vietnamese New Year, the Vietnamese observe the custom of kitchen God Tao. With the belief that the three gods are represented by the three legs of the cooking equipment, the kitchen custom is followed all over Vietnam. Vietnamese New Year is no wonder incomplete if one doesn't eat the special rice pudding known as “ Banh Chung ” or “ Banh Tet ”.
