New Year in Scotland

Hogmanay starts just after the Boxing Day on December 26th.

Hogmanay or the New Year in Scotland were introduced to the Scots by the invading Vikings in 8th and 9th century. Cleansing the house, taking out ashes from the fire and clearing all debts are some traditions that are counted as part and parcel of New Year in Scotland. One of the most spectacular customs that can be seen during New Year in Scotland is the swinging of giant fireballs on long metal poles.

Other popular tradition that is being practiced by many in Scotland during New Year is the ritual of "First footing". It's believed that the first person over the threshold on the New Year's Day, i.e., on January 1st will dictate the luck brought to the particular house in the New Year. All this and bodytext3 can be seen and enjoyed during the New Year in Scotland.
