Tibetan New Year Losar

February 6th, that's right, this is the day when the Tibetans all over the world celebrate the famous Tibetan New Year Losar. "Lo" meaning year and "Sar" meaning new, together make the word called "Losar".Known as the great prayer festival, Losar is celebrated to welcome the New Year and bid farewell to the old one.

The origin of Tibetan New Year Losar can be traced back to the pre-Buddhist period in Tibet. Losar is known to be introduced by an old woman named Belma, who introduced the measurements of time based on the phases of moon. In the ancient times seeing the peach tree in full blossom marked the beginning of the New Year. But later with the systematization of the Tibetan calendar in 1027 A.D., the first day of the first month was fixed as the New Year's Day.Marked with various rituals along with a wide array of festivities is the Tibetan New Year Losar.
Painting the homes, wearing new clothes, clearing all debts and quarrels, cooking good food and illuminating the house at night are some of the activities followed by the Tibetans for Losar. Other popular rituals that are followed on Tibetan New Year Losar are sacrificing a male and female goat and menfolk roaming with flaming torches overhead at night to ward off the evil spirits and sickness from their family and Tibet on the whole.
