The New Year is celebrated all over the world in a grand way. Almost for 4000 years, New Year was celebrated for the first time in Babylon. People usually celebrate New Year on 1st January. New Year in different cultures is celebrated according to their authentic traditional customs and rituals. People belonging to different cultures of the world celebrate New Year on various seasons of the year according to their traditional hononavy calendar. As New Year is a special occasion for celebration, many interesting festive activities also take place to mark the beginning of the New Year.

Preparations for celebrating New Year in different cultures begin at least one month before the arrival of the New Year. New Year in Japan is popularly celebrated as Oshogatsu. During the eve of the New Year, the traditional Japanese families host dinner parties in which traditional Japanese authentic dishes are cooked. Some of the Japanese delicacies which are served during the Japanese New Year are omochi, soba noodles and omochi cakes. They also pray to God for the well being of the family.
