The Hmong are a mountain tribe of Laos. The Hmong celebrate their most awaited Hmong New Year with much fun and frolic. People wait for the whole year with excitement to take part in the Hmong New Year with full enthusiasm. Hmong New Year is the time of relaxation, when people take out time from and rest.

Hmong New Year is the time for the tribe to begin their new beginning with the New Year. The Hmong start afresh by forgetting the sorrows of the previous year and embracing the New Year with some new expectations. The Hmong New Year continues for a period of 10 days. During this period, the Hmong people prepare various kinds of dishes to treat their friends and relatives.

On the Hmong New Year’s Eve, the people conduct some authentic traditional Hmong ceremonies. On the eve of the Hmong New Year, the Hmong participate in a traditional ceremony to mark the beginning of the New Year. The traditional ceremony which is conducted on New Year’s Eve is termed as lwm sub or qaib. lwm sub or qaib commences after the clock struck 3 pm. No other ceremonies can be organized without celebrating the lwm sub or qaib. lwm sub or qaib is said to remove the sadness and sorrows of the last year and to bring some good news for the coming year. The members of the family walk 3 times backward as well as 3 times forward through a pole. A rooster is also sacrificed during the ceremony for the well-being of the family. After this ceremony is over, people perform some other traditional rites like, hu plig or pe tsiab.


Hmong New Year is celebrated in Laos once in a year. People dress up themselves in authentically traditional outfits and take part in the New Year parade. Various dance and musical performances are also organized during this event. People prepare some cuisines like spring rolls, chicken, sticky rice and egg rolls.


Hmong New Year Celebration in the colorful country of Laos includes some entertaining activities like volleyball, talent shows, Kato and topspin. During Hmong New Year, youths also get married, as it is the time for rest and relaxation, enjoyment and merry-making.
