Lunar New Year

Beginning February 18th this year, Lunar New Year is celebrated on the first new moon of the New Year. Also known, as the Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year is said to be the celebration of changes celebrated by the Chinese all over the world. Time to renew ourselves by dumping away the old and bringing in the new, Lunar New Year is a symbol of spring's celebration.

It was Emperor Huangdi who invented the Chinese calendar in 2637 B.C. Chinese calendar is designed after a round of astronomical calculations. First of all the dates for the new moon are determined, then the calculations like whether that date is a multiple of 30 is taken and finally some dates are fixed, known as the Principal terms.

Preparation for the Lunar New Year begins months before with people following a series of traditions. All the old things are thrown out of the house and are replaced with the new. People begin with thorough housecleaning, scrubbing each nook and corner to ensure that their homes get rid of bad luck. Menu for the Lunar New Year's Eve Dinner is being made.

When talking about the Lunar New Year, one can't forget mentioning about the fireworks. The tradition of fireworks is rooted in another ancient custom. The legend is like in ancient China, Nian, a man-eating beast could infiltrate houses, this made the Chinese scared and later they came to know that Nian was sensitive to color red and loud noises and since then the custom of burning fireworks has been followed to cast away the evil spirit.
