Cities in Kenya

Cities in Kenya are a nice blend of urbanization, modernism, culture, traditionalism and ethos.

Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is the biggest commercial hub of the country. It was the capital of the British East African Empire. A place that is believed to have been a salty slough is now the biggest and busiest city of Kenya.

On one hand, you can find skyscrapers, museums and big shopping malls, and on the other, you have the perilous jungles, national parks, and burgeoning wildlife. Among all cities in Kenya, Nairobi is the most sought-after tourist destination.

The Nairobi National Park, the National Museum, and the Giraffe Center are just some of the worth-watching places in this Kenyan city.

Another important Kenyan city is Mombasa. The second largest city in Kenya, after Nairobi, Mombasa is the main center for coastal tourism in the country. Having witnessed a number of groups fighting for its ownership, the city is locally nicknamed the 'Island of War'.

Having a large number of inhabitants from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, Mombasa draws a lot of tourists from these areas every year. This is the main reason for the booming tourism sector in this city of Kenya.

Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese, is the prime tourist attraction of this city. The Biashara Street, or the Trade Street, is the main market area wherein Indians and Arabs own numerous shops.

Malindi is a costal city in Kenya. This place is a favorite with Italian tourists. The city also has a highway that links Mombasa with Lamu Island. The Watamu and Malindi marine national parks are the biggest tourist draws here.

The Lamu Island in Kenya is inscribed as the 'oldest and best preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa' in the World Heritage List.

It was a big center for slave trade in Kenya. This city of Kenya has a huge Muslim population as it was on the main Arabian trading routes. Quite strangely, you are not allowed to use any automobiles here. Places worth a visit are the Lamu Museum, Lamu Fort, and the Riyadha Mosque.

Other cities in Kenya that demand a visit are Shimoni, Kakuma, Bungoma, etc.
